The artist
Carmen Chiusolo Jr.
Painter. Comic Artist. Storyteller.
I paint because silence has a color. My work begins where language ends — in the raw, unfiltered space between feeling and form.
Carmen Ralph Chiusolo Jr. is a Bucks County, PA native who has spent his life working across two disciplines — painting and comics — each one feeding the other. The sequential storytelling of comics sharpened his eye for composition and narrative. The freedom of the canvas gave him room to push color and emotion beyond any panel border.
His process is physical. Carmen R. Chiusolo Jr. works large, often on the floor, moving around the canvas rather than standing at a distance from it. Paint is applied with brushes, palette knives, rags, and sometimes bare hands. The body is part of the work.
Color is his primary language. Carmen Chiusolo Jr. is drawn to combinations that feel almost wrong — burnt orange against deep violet, raw ochre bleeding into cool slate — because that friction is where the painting comes alive.
Process
Every painting begins with a feeling, not a plan. I resist sketching or mapping in advance — the canvas should surprise me.
01
Intuitive start
I begin with a single mark or wash of color, no agenda. The first gesture sets the emotional key for everything that follows.
02
See the vision
I step back and let the canvas speak — reading what wants to emerge, where the light wants to fall, what the composition is reaching toward.
03
Create harmony
Color, form, and texture are brought into balance. Each element earns its place — nothing forced, everything in service of the whole.
Influences & inspiration
Franz Kline's raw architecture. Helen Frankenthaler's stained fields. The light filtering through the trees in late-afternoon Bucks County. The visual language of comics — panels, tension, the moment before and after. Conversations that go nowhere and everywhere at once.
The painting is not a picture of an experience — it is the experience.
